Gemäldegalerie (Picture Gallery) is among the largest and most important art museums in Berlin. Located on Matthäikirchplatz, it opened in 1998 to display works from previously divided collections. It is one of the richest and most impressive collections of European paintings from the 13th to 18th centuries in the world. The 1,500 paintings include works by Bruegel, Dürer, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens, Rafael, Titian, and Caravaggio.
The main gallery has 72 rooms divided into two sections: Italian paintings and Dutch-German paintings. An octagonal room is at the center of the museum, displaying some of the 16 works by Rembrandt. Early German works are also well represented with several works by Lucas Cranach as well as eight by Albrecht Dürer. Comfortable footwear is recommended – seeing all the rooms involves a 2.2-km (1.3-mile) walk.
